El Toro Bicyclist Wins No. 1 Pro Title

Pete Loncarevich of El Toro overcame a 165-point deficit Sunday to capture the No. 1 Pro national championship at the ninth annual American Bicycle Assn. Grand Nationals.

Heading into Sunday’s finals, Loncarevich trailed Ronnie Anderson of Pittsburgh by 165 points. After the first two main events the two riders were tied. The 20-year-old Californian then won the final main to win the national crown.

On Friday night, Loncarevich won the Honda Super Cup, a race involving 27 riders who each had won a national event during the past year.

In other finals Sunday, all amateur events, Dianna Bowling of Rancho Cordova, Calif., defeated Michelle Gibson of Placentia to win the No. 1 Girl division.

In No. 1 Cruiser, Matt Hadan of Azusa outdistanced Galen Starlin of Peoria, Ariz., by 18 points.

And in No. 1 Amateur, Eric Carter of Lakewood defeated Robert Swick of Lake Elsinore by 22 points.
