Kansas, the sixth-ranked team in the country, easily won its second straight game of the season Monday night, beating Southern University, 87-69, at Allen Field House in Lawrence, Kan.

You’d think that Coach Larry Brown would be happy after such a lopsided victory, the 35th straight for the Jayhawks at home. Not so.

“I’m glad that’s over,” Brown said. “We’re not very good right now. We’re not the number six team in the country right now.”

Forward Danny Manning, who led the Jayhawks with 21 points and had 11 rebounds, got a stern lecture from Brown after committing his second foul with 12:07 left in the first half and Kansas leading, 16-11. Manning spent the rest of the half on the bench.

“The biggest concern I have is that we’re not playing with the effort that it takes to win,” Brown said. “Right now we’re not nationally ranked, I don’t care what anybody says.”

Southern (1-1), trailed just 38-35 with 3:24 left in the first half, but Kansas scored 11 consecutive points to take a 49-35 lead two minutes into the second half.

Purdue 96, Illinois St. 54--The fourth-ranked Boilermakers showed that they like the new three-point shot as they improved their record to 2-0 at Lafayette, Ind.

Purdue made 6 of 13 shots from three-point range. The Boilermakers put the game away with a 21-2 scoring blitz in the second half.

“We never talk about shooting three-pointers in practice,” Coach Gene Keady said. “We just usually run our offense and look for the best shot. If it’s a three-pointer, we’ll take it.”

Illinois State Coach Bob Donewald was glad the margin wasn’t even larger. “As the game developed, my thoughts reflected back to 1975-76, when I was (an assistant) with Bob Knight at Indiana,” he said. “I think Gene (Keady) was really kind, and it could have been a lot worse. That’s the way we used to handle people (at Indiana). Now I’m getting my lunch handed to me.”

Alabama 96, Furman 69--Crimson Tide Coach Wimp Sanderson’s philosophy about three-point plays is similar to that of Purdue’s Keady.

“I have the attitude of letting the three-point play happen, rather than going out there and shooting for it,” Sanderson said after No. 8 Alabama routed the Paladins behind the three-point shooting of Mark Gottfried.

Gottfried, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, scored 23 points, including 21 on three-pointers. He made 7 of 11 from the three-point line. In all, the Tide made 12 of 19 three-point attempts.

Syracuse 82, George Washington 69--Greg Monroe scored eight points in the first 4:30 of the second half as the Orangemen overcame a three-point halftime deficit to pull away from the Colonials at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse.

Monroe made two three-point baskets and another long jumper as No. 17 Syracuse (2-0) reeled off a 15-2 streak to take a 48-38 lead with 15:30 left to play.

Florida 98, Stetson 75--Freshman center Dwayne Schintzius had 18 points and 9 rebounds in his second college game to help the Gators win at Daytona Beach.

The Gators (1-1) pulled away from the Hatters (0-2) with a 17-2 run that spanned both halves. The streak gave Florida a 56-41 lead.

The 7-1 Schintzius didn’t do as well on defense, though, as Jimmy Kuhl, Stetson’s 6-8 center, scored 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Nebraska 76, Oregon 60--The Cornhuskers used six three-point baskets to draw away to a 43-34 halftime advantage and go on to give Danny Nee his first victory as head coach.

Nebraska (1-1) capitalized on some poor Oregon shooting down the stretch to build an 18-point lead.

Oregon’s Anthony Taylor led all scorers with 21 points. The Ducks are also 1-1.

Wake Forest 80, Coastal Carolina 55--Mark Cline, a 6-7 forward, scored 18 of his 21 points in the first half to help the Demon Deacons win their season opener at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tyrone Bogues, the Demon Deacons’ 5-3 guard, also had a big game. He had 18 points, 9 assists and 5 steals.

Pacific 57, Rice 49--The Tigers, who trailed, 45-44, with 2:46 left in the game, outscored the Owls, 12-5, to improve their record to 1-1.

Christian Gray scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half for Pacific.

The loss snaps a streak of 18 straight nonconference wins by the Rice on its home court. Greg Rice led the Owls (0-3) with 30 points.

UC Santa Barbara 87, San Diego St. 70--Khris Fortson and Carrick DeHart each scored 18 points to lead the Gauchos at Santa Barbara.

The Gauchos (1-1) led, 62-60, with 7:15 left, then outscored the Aztecs, 25-10 to seal the victory. UCSB also outrebounded the Aztecs (0-1), 58-34.
