Police are searching for three employees of the Alvarez Ranch in Carlsbad who are suspected of shooting their supervisor in the back Monday after an argument, police said.

Leopoldo Ramirez Guerrero, 39, was pumping water from a well in front of his Carlsbad home at 4 p.m. Monday when one of his workers allegedly approached him from behind and shot him with a small-caliber gun from about 30 yards away as two other workers watched, Detective Richard Castaneda said.

Guerrero was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Scripps Memorial Hospital-La Jolla, where he was listed in fair condition Monday.

In an interview with police, Guerrero identified the three men.

Police are still trying to determine a motive for the shooting and the nature of the argument, Castaneda said.

After the shooting, which took place in the 5000 block of El Camino Real, the three men fled in an old car, Castaneda said, adding that police have determined that the suspects live near Guerrero.
