A motorist who stopped on a highway to put out a car fire near the Riverside-San Bernardino county line was struck and fatally injured by a pickup truck as he returned to his own car, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Frank Romero was driving down the Corona Expressway when he spotted a vehicle on fire on the opposite side of the winding two-lane road. Romero, 62, extinguished the fire, then was hit by the pickup as he walked back across the roadway, CHP Officer Terry Taylor reported.

The Los Nietos, Calif., resident was airlifted from the scene, just south of the Riverside-San Bernardino county line, to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he died late Monday night, Taylor said.

Authorities did not expect to file charges against the driver of the truck that hit Romero, but an investigation is continuing, he added.

“He was being a good Samaritan and that cost him his life,” Taylor said.
