Scotty Bowman, who had removed himself as coach of the Buffalo Sabres Nov. 6, was fired as general manager of that club, ending his eight-year tenure with the National Hockey League team. Bowman, whose 739-327-210 record with the Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and St. Louis Blues made him the winningest coach in NHL history, was replaced by former Sabre captain Gerry Meehan, who had been assistant general manager.
The Sabres, who failed to make the playoffs last year, have the league’s worst record, 5-15-3.
