Dense fog closed Lindbergh Field Wednesday night, canceling outgoing flights and diverting San Diego-bound planes to other cities for at least several hours, airport supervisors said.

Beginning about 7:30, the fog had caused the airport to be below minimum visibility requirements, forcing its closure to both inbound and outbound planes. Airport officials said late Wednesday night that they expected the closure to last perhaps as long as until mid-morning today.

Some San Diego-bound flights were diverted to Los Angeles International Airport Wednesday night. Decisions on alternate airports for the diverted flights are made by the individual airlines, an airport supervisor said.
