Black & Decker Inc. has agreed to pay an $85,000 civil penalty to settle charges that it failed to report defects in some of its weed and grass trimmers, the Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday.

The agency had charged that Black & Decker, of Towson, Md., did not promptly report that it had been notified of problems with the fan and cap assembly on some of its trimmers.

A recall of the trimmers was announced in March.
