Alderman Edward R. Vrdolyak, nemesis of Democratic Mayor Harold Washington, announced Thursday he will be a candidate for mayor in 1987 but left open the possibility that he may run as an independent.

Washington, the city’s first black mayor, made his reelection effort official last weekend, although he did not say whether he will run as a Democrat or an independent.
