Beryl W. Sprinkel, chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers, predicted that the U.S. economy will expand by a modest 3.2% next year, up from this year’s sluggish growth but a full percentage point below the council’s earlier projection. At the same time, the National Assn. of Business Economists projected growth for next year at an even lower 2.8%, and some said that a new recession may be looming in 1988. But Sprinkel told reporters: “You can eliminate recession as a major risk.”
