Australia Ratifies Nuclear-Free Treaty
Associated Press
CANBERRA, Australia —
Prime Minister Bob Hawke announced ratification of a treaty declaring the South Pacific a nuclear-free zone Monday, the same day that word arrived of a new French nuclear test at Mururoa Atoll.
Hawke said Australia is the eighth country to ratify the accord, which means it now will take effect. The French test on Mururoa was the seventh this year and the 80th since testing began there in 1976.
