HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The Seattle Mariners traded pitcher Matt Young to the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Dennis Powell and a minor league prospect today in the first significant deal of baseball’s winter meetings.
Young, a left-handed reliever, led the Mariners with 13 saves last season and had an 8-6 record with a 3.82 ERA. Young, 28, pitched four years for the Mariners, mostly as a starter until last season, and was selected to the All-Star team in 1983 as a rookie. “We needed a left-handed reliever as a short man,” Dodgers General Manager Al Campanis said. In addition to Powell, the Mariners also got second baseman Mike Watters.
