NEWMAN, TURNER AND ‘VIEW’ PICKED BY BOARD OF REVIEW

Paul Newman and Kathleen Turner were named best actor and best actress of 1986 by the National Board of Review Thursday, while the best picture award went to the English film “A Room With a View.”

Newman won for “The Color of Money” and Turner was named best actress for “Peggy Sue Got Married.”

Woody Allen headed the balloting for best director for “Hannah and Her Sisters,” which was also the runner-up in the best picture category.

Dianne Wiest, from “Hannah and Her Sisters,” was named best supporting actress, and Daniel Day Lewis, who appeared in both “A Room With a View” and “My Beautiful Laundrette,” won as best supporting actor.

Franco Zefferelli’s “Otello,” from Italy, was picked as the best foreign-language film.

The National Board of Review, which has been in existence since 1917, is made up of film critics, researchers, authors and academicians throughout the United States.

The top 10 films in the best-picture voting were: “A Room With a View,” “Hannah and Her Sisters,” “My Beautiful Laundrette,” “The Fly,” “Stand By Me,” “The Color of Money,” “Children of a Lesser God,” “ ‘Round Midnight,” “Peggy Sue Got Married” and “The Mission.”
