A TWA jumbo jet with 308 passengers made an unscheduled landing at Goose Bay, Newfoundland, today after a fire was detected in the cargo hold. One passenger was seriously hurt and several less seriously injured in an emergency evacuation, government officials said.

They said a warning light in the cockpit indicated a fire in one of the Boeing 747’s cargo holds. When the plane landed, the pilot activated remote-control fire extinguishers after smoke was seen coming from the hold. The passengers were then evacuated on emergency slides. The flight was bound from Frankfurt, West Germany, to New York.
