USC’s basketball team will play its final pre-conference game today, a 3 p.m. meeting with Western Washington at the Sports Arena.

The Trojans will open the Pacific 10 season next Saturday against Washington State at Pullman, Wash., followed by a game Dec. 23 against Washington at Seattle.

USC has a 3-3 record. Western Washington, an NAIA team, is 5-2.

“We need as many wins as we can get and we need some quality practice time next week,” USC Coach George Raveling said. “If we can get in a good week of practice, we’ll be ready for Washington State and Washington. But we won’t be ready for UCLA, Arizona, or Cal. We may never be ready for them.”

The Trojans shot 49.1%, a season high, in beating Niagara, 69-62, Thursday night at the Sports Arena. According to Raveling, poor shooting has been the team’s most persistent problem.

Western Washington is coached by Brad Jackson, who was a point guard and later a graduate assistant for Raveling when he coached at Washington State in the mid-1970s.
