Tennis Roundup : Edberg-Jarryd to Defend Doubles Title Today Against Noah-Forget
Defending champions Stefan Edberg and Anders Jarryd of Sweden, and the French team of Yannick Noah and Guy Forget won semifinal matches Saturday to reach the final of the $255,000 Masters Doubles Championship at London.
Edberg and Jarryd defeated Americans Gary Donnelly and Mike DePalmer, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Earlier, Noah and Forget beat Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia and John Fitzgerald of Australia, 6-2, 6-4, 7-6.
In a match for fifth place, South Africans Christo Steyn and Danie Visser beat Sergio Casal and Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 7-6, 6-3.
At Stuttgart, West Germany, Boris Becker rebounded from an upset loss to win his semifinal match against fellow West German Eric Jelen, 6-3, 6-4, in the $150,000 Young Masters tournament.
In today’s final, Becker faces Jonas Svensson of Sweden, who beat countryman Kent Carlsson, 6-0, 6-4.
Friday, Becker lost to Andrei Chesnokov but gained the semifinals in the round-robin event because his tournament record was better than the Soviet’s.
