A driver traveling the wrong way on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton was killed in a head-on collision early Monday that left the driver of the other car in critical condition, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The driver who died was traveling north in the southbound lanes about 1:30 a.m. when his car smashed into a car driven by Colin Grant, 20, of Oceanside.
The wrong-way driver was burned beyond recognition after his car burst into flames.
Grant, who was returning home from work in San Clemente, was taken to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo by Life Flight helicopter.
It was the second fatal accident in three weeks involving a wrong-way driver near Camp Pendleton. The first crash killed three people.
