The City Council has voted to install a metal detector at the public entrance to its chamber in an effort to prevent an incident similar to the recent shooting death of the mayor of Mount Pleasant, Iowa.

“There is a lesson to be learned here, a lesson which should have been learned long ago,” said Councilwoman Michelle Madoff, who sponsored the proposal that passed 7 to 1 at Monday’s meeting.
