The Soviet Union said the decision by the International Olympic Committee to allow some professionals to compete in the Olympics was a mistake. It also warned that a failure to share the 1988 Seoul Summer Games between North and South Korea would have “unpredictable consequences”--a phrase some observers took to mean a possible Soviet boycott of the Games.
“The IOC has done nothing to convince world public opinion of the correctness of the measures it has taken,” Tass said, adding that if talks between the two Koreas fail to produce results, “this will have unpredictable consequences not only for the Summer Games of 1988 but also for the international Olympic movement as a whole.”
