IBM Workers Leap at Retirement

NEW YORK — International Business Machines Corp. said today that more than 10,000 of its U.S. employees will take early retirement under an incentive program, and the computer giant said it saw “no signs of improvement” in its general worldwide business climate. At the beginning of 1986 IBM had 242,000 U.S. workers.
IBM said the response to its retirement incentives by the Dec. 15 deadline was greater than expected.
