KALAPANA, Hawaii — Two forks split from the seething lava flowing from Kilauea volcano before dawn today and one crept through an evacuated housing area, burning and burying nine more homes, scientists said.
The 2,000-degree lava snaked down a street on the western boundary of the Kalapana Vacation Lots subdivision, also known as Kalapana Gardens, on the island’s southeast coast. Kilauea lava flows have now claimed 22 homes over the past month as well as the entrance to a religious retreat.
