Tried Yugoslavian Skiing

Based on my experience last Christmas, the Nov. 16 article about Sarajevo as a winter ski resort is likely to vastly mislead your readers. My stay there was a disaster from the viewpoint of the skiing, the hotel accommodation, the food and the organization overall. Skiing is highly unpredictable as regards condition of the slopes, operation of facilities, and the weather. Unlike Adriatic Yugoslavian resorts, Sarajevo has much yet to learn about catering to tourists and certainly does not justify comparison to the likes of St. Moritz or Innsbruck.

Yugoslavians are friendly and hospitable enough as individuals, and their country has much of interest. At the management level, however, I found it to be an entirely different matter. When a deficiency remains uncorrected, one is met by bland indifference, stonewalling or unconvincing assurances that things will be better the next day.

I could not recommend Sarajevo for the ardent skier at any price and, unless you have a very high threshold of tolerance to frustration, I would not recommend it at all as a winter resort. ANTHONY D. OLIVER MD Riverside
