Penguins Get Tie; Simpson Has 3 Goals

Craig Simpson scored his third goal of the game with four minutes left to give the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-4 tie with the Montreal Canadiens Monday night.

Montreal is now in a first-place tie with Hartford in the Adams Division, each with 39 points.

Simpson scored two of his three goals with less than eight minutes remaining in the third period as the Penguins rallied from a two-goal deficit.

The teams were tied, 2-2, starting the third period when Dave Maley scored at 3:50 and Mike McPhee, at 12:17, to give Montreal a 4-2 lead.

Simpson came right back with a goal at 12:29 on a pass from Kevin Lavallee, and tied the score on a power play at 16:00.

Larry Robinson and Guy Caronneau also scored for Montreal while Dan Frawley added Pittsburgh’s other score.

Patrick Roy made 25 saves in the Montreal net.

It was the Penguins’ first game without scoring leader Mario Lemieux, who injured his knee Saturday and will be sidelined for three weeks.

The tie snapped a three-game Pittsburgh losing streak.
