A 2-year-old boy fell six floors to his death off a downtown hotel balcony Friday evening after his parents left him alone in their room while they visited friends, San Diego police said.

Police received a call about 6:15 p.m. saying that someone had fallen from a balcony of the Holiday Inn, 1617 1st Ave., Sgt. Micki Farrell said.

The victim was Toshio Mizuno, son of Tamika and Michiko Mizuno of Eagle Pass, Tex., Deputy Coroner Chuck Bolton said.

“From what I understand, he and his parents had just returned from a day on the town, visiting the zoo and all, and they put him down for a nap and went to visit some friends who were also staying at the hotel,” Bolton said.

The Mizunos were paged by the hotel staff and notified of the death, Bolton said.

“At some point, the child awoke and somehow found his way out onto the balcony, and then fell,” Farrell said.

Bolton said the coroner’s office will turn over its information to the San Diego Police Department’s child abuse unit.
