Police Sunday arrested four suspected Basque separatists as they were making a bomb, officials said.

The four, believed to be members of the Basque separatist organization ETA (Basque Homeland and Freedom), were detained under Spain’s anti-terrorist law, which allows police to hold a suspect incommunicado for up to 10 days.

They were identified as Jose Alberto Arribas, Mikel Gotzon Zumarraga, Joaquin Maria Aldonamalo and Juan Jose Victoria.

Officers said that explosives, four pistols and a machine gun were confiscated. They gave no further details.

It was not immediately clear whether the guerrillas planned to attack a French-owned establishment in line with recent ETA attacks on French targets in retaliation for France’s expulsion of suspected separatists.

ETA bombed the French-owned Novotel hotel in Madrid on Christmas day, causing extensive damage but no injuries.
