San Diego homicide detectives investigating a weekend shooting that left four people dead and another seriously wounded confirmed Tuesday that they are stretching the probe into the interior of Mexico trying to locate witnesses who might help solve the case.

Homicide Sgt. Hank Olais said detectives, acting on tips from the public, were trying to bring the witnesses to Tijuana to interview them. He added that the victims were from Mexico’s interior.

A coroner’s report tentatively identified two victims; Miguel Martinez Vasquez, 20, of Mexico City, and Enrique Mejia Beltran, 25. Olais said detectives could not reveal the identities of the other victims “until the families arrive from the interior of Mexico.”

In a related matter, Deputy Coroner Everett Mauger confirmed that the four dead people, which included one woman, were all shot in the head. The coroner’s office reported that the victims also suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the torso.

The coroner’s report did not indicate whether the victims were all shot at close range. Olais said he could not reveal how many persons opened fire on the five people but added, “I can tell you that multiple weapons were used.”

The murders took place early Sunday in a home in the College Grove area. Two men and a woman died at the scene, and a third man was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he died later.

The fifth victim was taken to a local hospital, where he was recovering from gunshot wounds to the stomach. He was listed in serious condition. All of the victims were described as Latinos in their 20s.

Olais said he spoke to the wounded man but could not get much information from him because of his condition.

“He is heavily sedated, somewhat confused and disoriented,” Olais said, adding that he plans to meet with the man throughout the week.

A motive for the slayings was still unknown, and detectives said they were still looking into the possibility that the crime could have been a robbery or drug related. San Diego police officers said they found the home ransacked.
