Public Art

Congratulations, Los Angeles for unveiling two magnificent monuments for contemporary art within a two-week period.

Unfortunately, during that same two-week period one of L.A.’s (and the world’s) classic public art pieces was destroyed by someone who must have been insensitive or “money hungry” or both.

I’m referring to the painting over of Kent Twitchell’s “Old Woman of the Freeway,” which has delighted motorists on the northbound Hollywood Freeway for the past 14 years, to use the space for advertising.

When are we going to learn that we have to protect our irreplaceable local treasures as well as build new ones?
