A 40-foot gray whale finally broke free, 5 1/2 hours after becoming tangled in a gill net off the Palos Verdes Peninsula, Los Angeles County lifeguards said. Lifeguards tried without success to free the huge mammal for several hours before the whale escaped on its own. Lifeguard Lt. Jay Ahmundson said that if the whale had remained tangled, it could have died. Fishermen use gill nets to snag such large fish as sharks, bass and swordfish.
