THE YEAR OF THE OLD SPORT : ROSE MONTGOMERY : At 90, Amateur Golfer Has an 18 Handicap
Rose Montgomery is still going strong at 90.
For years, Montgomery was one of the top amateur women’s golfers on the West Coast. She won five Oregon amateur state golf titles beginning in 1927. She also won the Bing Crosby Pro-Am in 1950.
She has 382 trophies from golf in an eight-foot long case at her home in Palm Springs.
“I don’t know any girls my age who play golf,” said Montgomery, who has been playing golf since 1919. “When they started the women’s pro tour back in the 1930s I was approached to join. But they weren’t making any money because they were just starting and I hated to travel.” She’s an honorary member at Oakhurst Country Club in Glendale, Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs and a country club in Oregon.
She moved to Glendale in 1955. She has lived in Palm Springs since 1966. In fact, her home is next tothe sixth fairway of a golf course, Canyon Country Club.
Montgomery plays golf three times a week, and has an 18 handicap.
