Junipero Serra
Your article (Nov. 24) on Father Junipero Serra says that the famous missionary “was a member of the Inquisition.” True, he was. What you should have mentioned, however, is that Indians were exempt from the Inquisition. Junipero Serra, in his capacity as inquisitor in the Sierra Gorda, exercised inquisitorial jurisdiction only over non-Indians.
