Jet Engine Fails in LAX Landing

Share

Passengers aboard a Northwest Orient Airlines flight from Honolulu to Minneapolis via Los Angeles had some anxious moments early today when one of the jumbo jet’s three engines failed on its final approach to Los Angeles International Airport. None of the 328 passengers were injured and airline spokesman Bob Gibbons said most were rerouted on other flights or taken to local hotels for the night.

Gibbons said Flight 22 was landing at about 12:35 a.m. when a warning light from one of the three engines flashed on in the Boeing 747’s cockpit. The crew, he said, immediately shut the engine down. Gibbons said maintenance crews were inspecting the jetliner today in an effort to pinpoint the source of the problem.
