Las Virgenes Official Begins Term on Water Board

A Hidden Hills resident who heads the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District has begun a two-year term as vice chairman of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California.

Macneil Stelle will work on committees dealing with budget, engineering and water problems in his Metropolitan Water District board post.

The Metropolitan district supplies about half of the water used by 13 million people living from Ventura to San Diego counties. Local water districts, including Las Virgenes, and utility departments then pipe the water to homes and businesses and sell it directly to consumers.

Stelle, who helped form the Las Virgenes district in 1958, has represented the Calabasas-based water agency on the 51-member Metropolitan board since 1975, officials said.

A Metropolitan district spokesman said Stelle is one of three unpaid co-chairmen working with board chairman E. L. Balmer of El Segundo for the 1987-88 term.

The spokesman said other new appointments include that of Vincent M. Hardy of Simi Valley, who will head Metropolitan’s legal and claims committee. Hardy is a director of the Calleguas Municipal Water District.
