Women’s Basketball Roundup : UCLA and USC Both Defeated to Open Their Pacific 10 Seasons

The Stanford women’s basketball team defeated UCLA, 62-60, Friday night at Palo Alto as freshman guard Jennifer Azzi hit two free throws with three seconds left.

The game was the Pacific 10 opener for both teams. UCLA is now 5-4 overall, while Stanford improved to 7-3.

UCLA tied the game, 60-60, with 10 seconds left when Dora Doma hit a driving five-footer.

Dome was the leading scorer for UCLA with 17 points. Jaime Brown and Sheri Bouldin each had 12 for the Bruins. Jill Yanke led Stanford with 18.

UCLA’s next game is Sunday against California at Berkeley.

USC’s women lost to California, 102-85, at Berkeley in another Pac-10 opener.

USC falls to 6-4 overall, while Cal is ow 8-1.

Senior center Jennifer Bennett scored 35 points for Cal, while freshman forward Seija Leino added 32. Rhonda Windham scored 25 for USC, while Monica Lamb had 22.

USC plays at Stanford Sunday.

Seniors Sue Leiding and Carlisa Thomas combined for 47 points and 22 rebounds to lead Kansas State to a 95-51 nonconference victory over Chapman at Orange.

Leiding scored a career-high 27 points and had 7 rebounds. She had 19 points in the first half as Kansas State opened a 49-24 lead.

Thomas had a game-high 15 rebounds and scored 20 points.

Tina Cavalin had 15 points and 9 rebounds for the Panthers (5-6).
