Monstrous Inequity

Re John F. Lawrence’s Dec. 14 column, “In Takeovers, Human Toll Is Often Ignored”:
There is, indeed, a human toll to all the takeovers and mergers--the ruin of careers and jobs, the misery of families without income--all for the private gain of a few people, the Ivan F. Boeskys and Asher B. Edelmans, to enlarge their obscenely large private fortunes.
Even in feudalism, the serfs went with the land. In today’s new baronies, they can be driven away and the manor destroyed, subdivided, shipped abroad. Where are Americans to go?
Right in Yorba Linda, the takeover of the Pantry Markets by Vons has caused the closing of two fine stores and the near-destruction of a once-prosperous shopping center--all due to consolidation, merger and corporate gain.
More attention--much more--should be given to this blight, this monstrous inequity that is taken as just “good business” by the Wall Street crowd.
