Passenger Poll Shows Support of No Smoking : Passengers Support No Smoking

A majority of airline passengers prefer that smoking not be allowed on commercial flights, according to a customer survey conducted by Sunworld International Airways.

Sunworld polled 4,500 passengers. A 47.7% majority favored prohibiting smoking on all flights and 35.6% prefer retaining the regulations as they stand now. A total of 9.2% leaned toward allowing smoking on trips with limited flight time, while 7.5% marked the choice “Don’t really care.”

Recently the National Institutes of Health urged the Department of Transportation and other regulatory bodies to ban smoking on all domestic flights.

Sunworld will share the survey results with the Department of Transportation and other regulatory agencies.

Responding to the question of who should decide the matter of smoking on board, 49.1% chose the paying customer, 36.2% said individual airlines and 14.7% preferred the federal government.

The response to the question, “If an airline were to give a 10% discount to nonsmokers, would you fly that airline?” about 58% said they would fly the airline “Much more.”

About 70.7% of the respondents said they do not smoke at all.
