University of Maryland Chancellor John B. Slaughter, head of the President’s Commission of the NCAA, will be pressing to make freshmen ineligible for some high-pressure sports when the association meets this week in San Diego.

Slaughter told the Baltimore Sun he will bring to the body a resolution on eliminating freshman eligibility to see whether it might gain support.

The resolution, Item 54 in the official convention handbook, is sponsored by Maryland, UCLA, Miami (Fla.), the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina and North Carolina State.

Slaughter said he doesn’t foresee legislation to ban freshmen from some varsity sports being passed until at least the January, 1988 convention.

“We are using this as a means of testing the waters, to see what extent there is going to be receptivity,” he said. “If we know half the people are in favor of it, that is different from knowing 20% are in favor of it. I think it will give us some idea where we need to focus.”
