Worker Dies as Trench Caves In

A construction worker digging a trench at an apartment building under construction at 1412 W. Sunset Blvd. died this morning when earthen walls around him collapsed, burying him under two feet of dirt, a Los Angeles City Fire Department spokesman said.

Attempts by co-workers and paramedics to extricate the 30-year-old man in time to save him were unsuccessful, Fire Department spokesman Jim Williamson said. “They were building the foundation of the building and the walls caved in on him,” he said. The man’s name was withheld until relatives could be notified.
