Cerritos : Student Cholesterol Tests
More than 150 Benito Juarez Elementary School students in the ABC Unified School District will be tested Friday for blood cholesterol as part of a statewide pilot project to promote health and fitness among students.
Conferences will be held for parents of students with abnormally high cholesterol levels, and exercises and nutritional programs will be prescribed.
The three-year Comprehensive Health Education and Training Program was created last year by Bill Honig, state superintendent of schools. Six school districts in the Los Angeles area are participating, including ABC and Beverly Hills Unified School District. Each district received $50,000 for the first year. Two other ABC schools, Tetzlaff Junior High and Artesia High, are participating in the project, but the cholesterol test is taking place only at Juarez.
Juarez has an enrollment of more than 650, but less than half of the student body is part of the project.
The program is being run by a physical education teacher, school nurse and the district’s health and fitness coordinator.
