A college student who claimed he grew 14 marijuana plants as part of an economics class project was convicted on cultivation charges and sentenced to 270 days in jail. Jacques Metcalf, 29, was arrested in 1984, following a raid by police at his Cohasset area home. Authorities confiscated 14 marijuana plants, 10 pounds of drying marijuana and financial records. Metcalf pleaded guilty to the cultivation charge. Oroville Superior Court Judge William Patrick sentenced Metcalf to 270 days in Butte County Jail, but said he may allow Metcalf time to finish his courses at California State University, Chico, before serving the time.
