A 22-year-old Vietnamese man visiting friends was fatally shot late Wednesday, apparently as he went to a carport where a car had been deliberately set on fire, authorities said.

Hung Kim Tran was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest, Police Lt. Bill Wright said. But Wright said investigators have not been able to link the shooting, which occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, to the arson.

Friends of the victim told police they were in the living room of their apartment in the 2800 block of West Ball Road when Tran, for unknown reasons, went into a bedroom that has a door leading to the carport, Wright said.

The friends told authorities they heard three or four shots fired from the area of the rear bedroom. Moments later, their friend staggered into the living room bleeding from the chest area, Wright said. The wounded man collapsed, and efforts to revive him failed, he added.

Wright said police responding to reports of multiple gunshots found firefighters putting out a blaze that gutted a 1980 Nissan parked in the carport.
