San Diego Boat Will Return With Large Catch of Tuna

The Qualifier 105, a long-range fishing boat out of San Diego’s Fisherman’s Landing, will return to port Monday with a large catch of big yellowfin tuna.

The Qualifier 105, carrying 30 fishermen on a 16-day trip to the Hurricane Bank and the Revillagigedo Islands, will bring back 270 yellowfins between 150 and 200 pounds.

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--22 anglers (1 boat): 4 ling cod, 23 rock cod, 89 red rock cod, 27 red snapper, 44 bass.

SANTA BARBARA (Sea Landing)--16 anglers (1 boat): 214 red snapper, 1 ling cod.

OXNARD--35 anglers (2 boats): 312 rock cod, 2 cow cod, 76 rockfish, 6 bonito, 82 calico bass.

PORT HUENEME--13 anglers (1 boat): 194 rock cod, 1 cow cod.

MALIBU--32 anglers (2 boats)--11 calico bass, 3 bonito, 18 rockfish, 192 rock cod.

MARINA DEL REY--29 anglers (2 boats): 12 halibut, 50 mackerel.

REDONDO--65 anglers (3 boats): 175 bonito, 27 calico bass, 1 white sea bass, 15 blue perch, 150 mackerel, 182 rockfish.

SAN PEDRO (Ports ‘O Call)--36 anglers (2 boats): 6 yellowtail, 143 calico bass, 28 sand bass, 2 halibut, 4 rockfish, 22 bonito.

OCEANSIDE--36 anglers (1 boat): 2 bonito, 37 calico bass, 42 sand bass, 2 rockfish, 1 whitefish, 12 mackerel.

Freshwater

Bass fisherman Jerry Scotton of Oak View gave Lake Casitas anglers something to shoot at in 1987 when he caught a 15-pound 8-ounce largemouth bass on New Year’s Day.

Scotton used a plastic worm over the rock pile just outside the Casitas marina.

WILLOW BEACH-Good fishing for rainbow trout in the two-pound class upriver at rapids area. Still-fishing with standard baits best. Some rainbows to five pounds this week. Trout fishermen also catching some big catfish by accident.

LAKE MEAD--Slow overall. Some success reported on striped bass in Vegas Wash area. Best bet: 60- to 100-foot depths with anchovies or spoons. Some good crappie reports at Muddy River mouth in Overton Arm.

BULLHEAD CITY--Light fishing pressure overall, but some success reported by anglers trolling Lake Mohave for planters to 10 inches. Slow for catfish, all others. No striper activity on river. Topock Marsh slow, all species.

SALTON SEA--Improved fishing for orangemouth corvina with best action at Red Hill area. Lures working best for fish in 6- to 10-pound class. Some limits this week. Sargo, tilapia good at most areas. Slow for croaker.

LAKE CACHUMA--Good trout fishing in Cachuma Bay at 20-foot depths with cheese baits. Drake Cove productive area. Some largemouth bass success at island with plastic worms.

LAKE CASITAS--Good trout fishing generally from shores, boats. Bass fishing rated fair, but some large fish, like Scotton’s, caught occasionally. Fair for catfish.

LAKE PIRU--Good trout fishing at north end with cheese baits, or trolling three to four colors. Marshall Constant, Simi Valley, 9-12, 7-0, 5-6 and 5-0 bass on two consecutive days with crawdad-like lure. G. MacGlashan, Panorama City, 7-12 largemouth bass with black plastic worm.

LAKE SKINNER--Good to excellent trout fishing, numerous limits reported. Good crappie fishing.

CASTAIC LAKE--Good for trout. Bass fair at 20- to 40-foot depths. Trout limits this week.

LAKE ISABELLA--Cold weather, snow on ground. Light fishing pressure.

SAN DIEGO LAKES--Miramar: Good trout fishing continues. Limits this week with good sizes mixed in, including 6-12 and 5-12 rainbows. Other species slow. San Vicente: Improved for bass, trout fair to good. Otay: Opens sunrise, Jan. 21.

IRVINE LAKE--West shore closed to shore fishermen during rainy period. Good trout fishing off island area, with limits reported. Good crappie results in Sierra Cove.

LAKE SILVERWOOD--Good to excellent trout fishing. Striped bass fishermen casting at surfacing fish at night. Good largemouth bass action off rocky points.

LAKE HENSHAW--Good for catfish, crappie. Some catfish in four- to five-pound class. Other species slow.

BISHOP AREA--Good fishing for planted rainbows at Pleasant Valley Reservoir. Lower Owens River generally slow, but some success reported in wild trout stretches.
