Army Lt. Col. William L. Colvin of Diamond Bar, a professor of military science at Claremont McKenna College, has been awarded the Defense Superior Service Medal by the Defense Department. Colvin received the medal for superior service while concurrently supervising U.S. officers stationed at four sites in four Middle Eastern countries and serving as chief of Observer Group Lebanon. The group is composed of 77 military officers from 16 nations plus civilians assigned to a United Nations truce supervision team.

Dr. Alan L. Menkes, professor and chairman of the internal medicine department at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, has been elected chairman of the Department of Medicine at Ontario Community Hospital and Doctors Hospital in Montclair. Menkes has a private practice in Claremont.

Krishna Surti, 8, a student at Killian Elementary School in Rowland Heights, has won first place in a California adoption poster contest. Surti’s drawing will be printed on more than 7,000 posters that will be sent to adoption agencies, county welfare departments and state Department of Social Services adoptions branch offices to promote adoption. Surti also was awarded a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.

Bea Rexius has been named president of the Monterey Park Historical Society. Harry Herron and Emily Lambert were named vice presidents and Cledith Gerard was named curator of the society’s museum.

I. Paul Geleris of Glendora has been elected president of the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees. Geleris, a three-year board member, will serve a one-year term as president. Robert T. McClean was elected vice president.

Harrison L. Stephens and David E. Martin have been elected to the Brethren Hillcrest Homes Board of Directors. Stephens is former public information director for Claremont University Center and the Claremont Graduate School. Martin retired after 45 years with the Southern California Edison Co. and is a former area manager. Hillcrest Homes is a nonprofit retirement community in La Verne.

Dr. Alan J. Korostoff of San Marino has been elected president of the Alhambra Community Hospital Board of Trustees. Korostoff, a radiologist, has served the hospital for 10 years. Verne Brinegar of South Pasadena, Patricia Nelson of San Gabriel and Richard Nichols of Arcadia were chosen vice presidents.

Bob Miranda, vice president of the Garvey School District Board of Education in Rosemead, has been elected president of the Hispanic Caucus of the California School Boards Assn. The caucus will address the issues of educational opportunities for Latino students and effective school and community programs. Miranda lives in Rosemead and has served on the Garvey board three years.
