Women’s Basketball Roundup : No. 7-Ranked Long Beach Defeats UCI

Cindy Brown scored 22 points, and Shannon Smith added 20 as seventh-ranked Cal State Long Beach routed UC Irvine, 104-55, Saturday night in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game at Irvine.

Brown didn’t start but made 7 of 14 shots and had 7 rebounds in 22 minutes. Penny Toler added 16 points for the 49ers (3-0 in the PCAA, 11-1 overall).

Cheryl Elland had 18 points for the Anteaters (1-2, 5-8).

San Diego State 68, Cal State Fullerton 59--Jessica Haynes had 21 points to lead the Lady Aztecs (1-2, 4-8) past the Titans in a PCAA game in San Diego’s Peterson Gym.

Amy Torczon had 18 points and Jill Matyuch added 12 for Fullerton (0-2, 3-8).

UCLA 66, Arizona 65--Dora Dome scored 28 points, and the Bruin women (3-1, 9-4) held off the Wildcats for a Pacific 10 Conference victory at Tucson.

Arizona (0-3, 5-7) pulled to within 62-61 with 2:08 left.

Dome hit a basket and Michele Wootton added two free throws with 1:11 left, but the Wildcats weren’t finished.

Dana Patterson made a basket and Lava Acosta added two free throws with 12 seconds left, but Acosta missed a corner jumper at the buzzer.

USC 87, Arizona State 62--Cherie Nelson had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Trojan women past the Sun Devils in a Pac-10 game at Tempe, Ariz. Sherry Poole had 25 points for the Sun Devils (0-4, 5-7).
