Women’s Basketball Roundup : No. 7-Ranked 49ers Trounce Irvine, 104-55

Cindy Brown scored 22 points, and Shannon Smith added 20 as seventh-ranked Cal State Long Beach routed UC Irvine, 104-55, Saturday night in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s basketball game at Irvine.

Brown didn’t start but made 7 of 14 shots and grabbed 7 rebounds in 22 minutes. Penny Toler added 16 points; Cheryl Dowell scored 13, and Vicki Austin had 11 for the 49ers (11-1 overall, 3-0 in the PCAA). Long Beach scored 61 points in the second half.

Cheryl Elland had 18 points for the Anteaters.

UCLA 66, Arizona 65--Dora Dome scored 28 points, and the Bruin women held off the Wildcats for a Pacific 10 Conference victory at Tucson.

The Bruins (9-4, 3-1) held a 53-39 advantage with 9:34 left, but Arizona (5-7, 0-3) pulled to within 62-61 with 2:08 left. Dome hit a basket and Michele Wootton added two free throws with 1:11 left, but the Wildcats weren’t finished.

Dana Patterson, who had 14 points and 7 rebounds, made a basket and Lava Acosta, who scored 14, added two free throws with 12 seconds left, but Acosta missed a corner jumper at the buzzer.

USC 87, Arizona State 62--Cherie Nelson had 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Trojan women past the Sun Devils in a Pac-10 game at Tempe, Ariz.

Karon Howell added 20 points for the Trojans (8-4, 3-1), while Sherry Poole had 25 points for the Sun Devils (5-7, 0-4).
