The Raiders have fired Bob Zeman, linebackers coach and defensive signal-caller since 1984.
He is expected to be replaced by Charlie Sumner, a former Raiders assistant who left after the Super Bowl season of 1983 to become the head coach of the Oakland Invaders of the USFL.
Raider Coach Tom Flores would not elaborate on the reasons for firing Zeman.
“I think Bob is an excellent coach and he did a good job for us,” Flores said. “But for reasons I’d rather not state, he won’t be back with us.”
Zeman, 48, was an assistant with the Raiders from 1971 to 1977 before joining the staff of the Buffalo Bills. He returned to the Raiders in 1984.
