Recreation Center Named in Honor of Parks Official

Share

The Manchester Recreation Center, 8800 S. Hoover Blvd., has been renamed in memory of the late Algin Sutton, a former recreation supervisor for Los Angeles City Recreation and Parks who at one time was assigned to the Manchester center.

The name change was adopted by the Los Angeles Recreation and Park Commission on the recommendation of Councilman Robert Farrell, department staff and friends and relatives of Sutton.

When he died in early 1984, Sutton was in charge of nearly 60 recreation centers, swimming pools, senior citizen centers and other facilities in the southern and western portions of the city.

Sutton began working for the parks department in 1950. During his career he coordinated a wide range of federally funded programs that included summer employment for hundreds of disadvantaged youths.

In 1975, the Recreation and Youth Services Planning Council presented him with the George Hjelte Award for outstanding contributions as a recreation professional.
