Warnings against swimming at beaches in La Jolla and Point Loma remain in effect following two separate sewage spills Friday that dumped more than 30,000 gallons of raw effluent into the ocean.
The larger of the two spills occurred in La Jolla near the 200 block of South Coast Boulevard.
Authorities say tree roots that grew into the main sewer line in the area caused about 30,000 gallons of effluent to pour into the sea near Casa Beach before repairs could be made.
The second spill sent 265 gallons of sewage flowing into the ocean from a pump station in the 900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. Officials say the problem was caused by a switch at the plant that did not operate properly for nearly an hour.
Health officials posted signs at beaches in both areas to advise the public to stay out of the ocean. On Sunday, lifeguards were warning people not to swim at either beach or the Children’s Pool in La Jolla Cove, said city lifeguard Michael Knight.
