Leftist guerrillas in El Salvador called off their highway blockade after four days. The rebels’ Radio Venceremos said that the blockade, called to protest new taxes and forced conscription into the army, was a complete success. Press reports indicated the blockade kept most traffic off roads in western and northern El Salvador but was somewhat less successful elsewhere. The rebels also claimed they killed 19 soldiers in an attack on government warehouses in northern Chalatenango province. The armed forces said four soldiers died and six were wounded.
