A coalition seeking to save the historic Huntington Sheraton Hotel from demolition submitted a petition to the City of Pasadena temporarily blocking developers from tearing down the landmark. Leaders of the Defenders of the Huntington Hotel turned in a referendum petition with 9,544 signatures calling for the city Board of Directors to take back its decision allowing demolition of the 80-year-old hotel, City Clerk Pamela Swift said. The referendum temporarily invalidates the ordinance approved by the board last year allowing developers to tear down most of the 280-room hilltop hotel and build a similar hotel in its place, Swift said. The matter can be resolved in one of two ways. Either the city rescinds its demolition ordinance or it calls a special city election to let voters decide.
