Trust Buys Topanga Tract for Parkland

A 160-acre Topanga Canyon parcel that could become a major midway point on the Santa Monica Mountains’ 50-mile-long backbone trail has been bought as potential parkland by a Malibu-based nonprofit group.

The Hernandez Bowl, a rolling mountain glen off Saddle Peak Road on the west side of the canyon, has been acquired for $400,000 by the Mountains Restoration Trust, officials said Friday.

Elizabeth Wiechec, executive director of the trust, said the land will be transferred to the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area as soon as federal funds are available to reimburse her group.

Wiechec said contributions from environmentalists as well as a price reduction by the site’s former owners made the acquisition possible.
