Pacific 10 Roundup : Arizona’s Cook Beats Washington

Anthony Cook happened to be in the right spot at the right time.

Cook rebounded Tom Tolbert’s missed shot into the basket at the buzzer Saturday in Seattle to give Arizona a 73-72 victory over Washington, knocking the Huskies out of the Pacific 10 Conference lead.

“It was a long rebound,” said the 6-9 sophomore from Van Nuys, who scored the last seven points for Arizona (9-5 overall, 4-2 in the Pac-10). “I didn’t bring it down. I put it right back up. It was just a normal shot.

“I got the ball clear and saw (Chris) Welp reach for it. Welp was trying to put pressure on me with his arms up. I just looked at the basket, and it went in.”

Cook gave Arizona a 71-70 lead when he muscled in a shot over Welp with 34 seconds left. Al Moscatel hit an 18-footer to give the Huskies (7-10, 4-2) a 72-71 lead with 15 seconds remaining.

Washington led, 39-32, at halftime and was in front, 59-52, with nine minutes left. Arizona went in front for the first time in the second half, 64-63, on Craig McMillan’s three-point shot with 4:51 left.

McMillan scored 25 points, hitting on 7 of 12 three-point shots. Welp scored 26 points for the Huskies.

California 87, Stanford 72--Kevin Johnson scored 26 of his 31 points in the first half as the Bears turned back the Cardinal at Berkeley and moved into a tie for the Pac-10 lead with UCLA.

Johnson hit 10 of his 11 shots in the first half. He scored 11 points in a 2 1/2-minute span to help Cal (11-7, 5-2) take a 22-13 advantage.

Then, with Todd Lichti scoring 9 of his 29 points, Stanford (10-6, 4-3) came within 45-40 at halftime.

Cal scored six straight points to start the second half and gradually pulled away. The Bears made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch and 28 of 33 in the game.
